The Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) turned into a battlefield when students of two hostels opened fire at each other here on Wednesday evening.

The exchange of fire continued for more than an hour. Several students sustained injuries, university sources claimed. However no injury was reported to the police station, police said.

After the incident, the QAU administration closed down the university for seven days and hostels were got vacated forcibly. Heavy contingents of police were deployed in and around the university to avoid further clashes between the rival groups.

Sources in the Quaid-i-Azam University told 'The News' that angry students of hostels 6 and 7 came out with guns in the evening over the controversy of shifting students of a room in Hostel No. 6 and started firing at each other.

A similar kind of incident took place between the two groups on Tuesday night, but police resolved their grievances.

SP (City) Sajid Mehmood Kiani, when contacted by 'The News,' confirmed the clash between two groups of students. He said that he received information about firing on the campus.

Police have been deployed in the university, the SP said and added that the FIR would be lodged against students involved in the clash. He said that law and order would be maintained at every cost. The university administration could not be contacted despite repeated attempts on their telephones. The mobile phones of most of the administration officials were switched off.
